One of the 12 "jyotirlings" in the nation, the Mahakaleshwar Temple attracts pilgrims all year long. About 200 kilometres distance the state capital Bhopal from the mega corridor in Ujjain. In preparation for PM Modi's arrival, Ujjain has been decked up with vibrant flags on many lamp posts and with lights on numerous streets and flyovers, including the one that overlooks the new corridor and has become something of a selfie spot for locals called the Hari Phatak flyover.
The new corridor is almost 900 metres long and has 108 elaborate sandstone columns with beautiful "Trishul" (tridents) on top and "mudras" (symbolic hand gestures of Lord Shiva) on their faces, as well as 53 lighted murals that depict tales from the Shiv Puran and gushing fountains.
In addition to this, a senior official noted that the lower deck of the Rudrasagar lakeshore is home to a gigantic 111-foot Shiv Vivah mural and 28 panels with sculptures of "Saptrishis" on seven pedestals.
Sandstones were carved by about 400 sculptors who added decorations. Machine-assisted cutting was also applied to the gigantic mural panels on the wall to duplicate motifs more quickly, he said.
